It’s finally spooky season and sweater weather! We can’t wait for all the fun fall festivities and costumes! Here's a list of upcoming holidays and important dates to help you with social content plans. Happy early Halloween!

  • Oct. 1: International Coffee Day & World Vegetarian Day
  • Oct. 5: World Teachers‘ Day
  • Oct. 6-8: VCU Family Weekend
  • Oct. 9: Columbus Day & Indigenous Peoples’ Day
  • Oct. 9-11: VCU Qatar Week
  • Oct. 10: World Mental Health Day
  • Oct. 11: National Coming Out Day
  • Oct. 20: Midterm Grades Due & Reading Day (no classes held)
  • Oct. 26: National Pumpkin Day
  • Oct. 27: Last day to withdraw from a course with a mark of “W” – both campuses (except for courses not scheduled for the full semester) & deadline to request the Pass/Fail option for courses
  • Oct. 31: Halloween & spring semester advance registration begins

New branding social media avatars and templates, and the proposed social media policy:


During the October social media admin group meeting we will present the updated social media avatar frames, templates for use and also the new social media policy! Tune in then to learn more!

X (Twitter) plans to charge all users a small fee to keep using the platform:


Currently there is no update on when X plans to make this change and how much the fee will be. As soon as we know, we will make a decision on the platform and reach out to you all about our recommendation.

Next Strat Comms Council Meeting:


You are invited to attend the next SCC meeting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24. The presenter will be Jack Appleby, who joins for “An Outsider’s (Expert’s) Perspective on Social Media in Higher Education.”

  • UNcommon branding update:
    • Check out the brand website to login and download logos, letterheads, templates, social frames and more.
  • Can my student intern be an admin for our accounts?
    • No, your student intern should not be an admin, aka a manager of your social media accounts. However, they may help you create and post content. Only full time employees should be registered admins. Update admins here.
  • How do I make sure my social media posts are accessible?
  • Where do I find the social media guidelines?
    • Find checklists for social admins and more here.

  • What are the first things I should do when a social media admin leaves or changes?
    • Change the passwords to your accounts and put in a ticket to Jira to update admin contacts for your social media channels.
  • What email should I use for social accounts?
    • Please remember to create and log into your accounts with an official VCU email account (university group). If you need to set up a university group account, complete an IT Service Desk request.
  • When are the social media admin meetings?
    • Monthly social admin meetings take place every 3rd Tuesday of the month at noon via Zoom! The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at noon!
